MP3

You may have noticed I have released a new version of “Garst’s Song” on Archive.org. With the patents for MP3 allowed to lapse, I’ve decided to make the move to record in the MP3 format. I know that may sound counterintuitive, however, now that there are no licensing fees to use MP3, it should lead to better software to record and listen to the format.

That’s not the only reason I want to use it. MP3 widely supports metadata, so the track data I put into the raw audio master files I already put into them. I’m still going to use flac for the uncompressed format I upload to Archive.org, but I will also upload a high bit rate version as well. From now on, you should be able to view information such as the weekly song list if you view the metadata in the MP3 file.
